LED face masks range from about twenty dollars to well over four hundred, and the packaging rarely explains the difference. These are the five things worth checking before you buy.

1. The wavelength, in numbers

Look for 630nm or 660nm for visible red light and 850nm for near-infrared. If a listing only says “red light” or names colours without wavelengths, you cannot tell what you are buying.

2. LED count and spacing

Light falls off quickly with distance. More LEDs spaced evenly across the face means fewer gaps, and gaps are where a session does very little. A mask with 200 well-spread LEDs will beat one with 60 squeezed into the forehead.

3. Fit and weight

This is the specification nobody lists and everybody feels. A mask has to sit close to the skin without clamping, and stay put while you move. Heavier masks slide; rigid masks leak light around the edges. Silicone and flexible shells hold position better than hard plastic.

4. Power and freedom of movement

Cordless, rechargeable masks are worth the premium: a cable pulling on your face changes how long you will actually sit still. Check the battery capacity (2000mAh is a sensible baseline) and how long a full charge takes.

5. Controls you can use without looking

If you have to open an app and read a screen while wearing a mask, the routine dies in week two. Physical buttons, a remote, or a clear touch control with distinct intensity levels do the job better.

What you do not need

• Seven colours if you only use two. You are paying for LEDs you will not switch on.
• Numbers you cannot verify. Extra zeroes on the box are marketing, not output.
• Consumables. A device that needs gel, serum or refill pads is a subscription, not a purchase.
